Principle or Principal? Commonly Confused Words

 

Some words are often confused. Let’s clarify their meanings.

Today’s pair is principle and principal.

Principal is most often used as an adjective, while principle is solely a noun.

A principle is a fundamental truth or a rule, such as in science and nature. The aforementioned noun is also used for morally right attitudes and behavior. For example:

“He is a righteous man of principle.”

On the other hand, the word ‘principal’ can be used as a noun and as an adjective. As a noun, it’s the person who is in charge of an organization or institution like a school’s principal. Furthermore, the principal of your loan is the main part of it on which you pay interest. However, principal is mostly used as an adjective that means most important, first or main. For example:

“Canada’s principal trading partner is the United States.”
