Using Zoom as a Virtual ESL Classroom

As you may be aware, CanPacific’s online programs are delivered through Zoom. Zoom offers many great features that are practical for an ESL classroom and used in CanPacific’s virtual classrooms.

If you enroll in any of CanPacific’s online programs, you will receive an email from the teacher with the relevant link to the Zoom meeting, along with the Zoom meeting ID and password. You will need to enter them in order to join the class. Don’t worry if you are sent to a virtual waiting room after entering all of the details. It’s an additional and ‘just-in-case’ safety and security measure that prevents unauthorized individuals from joining the meeting.

During online classes, you will communicate with the teacher and classmates in real time. Handouts and other class materials will be shared with you via Zoom’s ‘Share Screen’ option. Students also share their work, such as their PowerPoint presentations, using this feature.

Zoom also offers a virtual ‘Whiteboard,’ which is used in CanPacific’s online programs as a substitute, in equal measure, for a regular whiteboard. Both the teacher and the students can type and even draw on the virtual whiteboard simultaneously

Zoom’s ‘Chat’ feature is also available. So, if there are unexpected (and unlikely) problems with your microphone, you will be able to type messages in the chat box and share them with everybody. Your teacher can also use it to send you links to educational materials or homework.
